Superb Transitional chest of drawers with double projection in rosewood, amaranth, boxwood and green-stained wood marquetry.
It opens to two drawers on two rows.
The recessed sides and front side panels are inlaid with four butterfly-winged rosewood leaves, underlined by boxwood and green-stained wood Greek-style fillets, while the recessed center section is decorated with a bouquet of flowers in a medallion, framed in amaranth.
The rounded front jambs are decorated with reserves matching the shape of the bronzes, and are inlaid with wide flutes in green-stained wood on a rosewood background.
Fine ornamentation of original chased and gilded bronzes, including ribbon-knot entrances, pull rings, falls and aprons, and claw hooves.
Original veined white marble top, period lock and key, all oak backs.
It is stamped C.LEBESGVE and JME on the back of the right rear jamb.
Transition period.
LEBESGUE Claude Pierre ( - 1789) , received his master's degree in 1750 and was a sworn member of his guild from 1769 to 1771. He had a very active workshop on rue Saint Nicolas and seems to have enjoyed a certain reputation; he is cited in the almanach général des marchands as one of the leading cabinetmakers in the capital.
Provenance: a Bordeaux home.
