Corner decorated with Martin varnish, Paris circa 1740

Very beautiful curved corner on the front and on the uprights.
It has a very beautiful decoration with martin varnish in imitation of Japanese lacquer.
The sides are decorated with branches of morning glories.
The door is decorated with an imperial chariot (Goshu-Garama) and a mound with shrub and bird, all framed by bands delicately decorated with scrolls.

The interior reveals a central shelf.

Beautiful ornamentation of bronzes decorated with pomegranates.

Original yellow breccia marble top.

Original solid oak base. (With a transport label from the beginning of the 20th century mentioning the city of Paris)

Good state of conservation, small usual restorations to the decor.

Parisian work from the early Louis XV period, around 1740.

Dimensions:

Height: 62 cm; Width by sides: 47 cm, Depth in the middle: 52 cm

Our opinion :

The corner cabinet that we are presenting is characteristic of the very first furniture imitating oriental lacquer made in Paris at the very beginning of the reign of Louis XV.
The absence of a stamp and the shape of the piece of furniture tell us that we are in the 1740s.
This luxury production was commissioned by a haberdashery merchant who supplied the marble and bronzes, with subcontracting to a master cabinetmaker for the frame and to a varnisher from Faubourg St Antoine for the decoration.
The frame may appear very sober at first glance but it has a very ingenious design, with concave and convex curves and an absence of low crosspiece which are the sign of high quality furniture.
The decor is also very studied since it takes up recurring subjects found on the leaves of certain EDO period cabinets.
Finally, the height of luxury, the corner is covered with a very beautiful yellow breccia marble, which is a reminder of the gold decoration of the lacquer.
