Titled "CREDO", a medieval knight in battle dress, displays a banner recalling the principles of Christianity. The initial example was presented at the Salon of 1889. Character bronze with detailed chasing, original dark brown patina, numbered old edition cast (Charles More) from the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. Base in Morello cherry red marble, work in good state of preservation, signature E. FREMIET on the base.
The height shown includes the marble base, the bronze alone measuring: 39.5 cm
Emmanuel Frémiet was born in Paris in 1824, trained at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and in the studio of the sculptor Rude, studying drawing, he presented many animal subjects. Equestrian statues, historical and religious figures will also be among his favorite themes.
Made famous for his monumental works: Joan of Arc on horseback in the Place des Pyramides, Saint-Michel at the top of the Abbey of the same name, the Duke of Orléans at the Château de Pierrefonds... Emmanuel Frémiet is one of the greatest sculptors in France.
