Important Griffin Chest of Drawers

Crossbow chest of drawers
attributed to François Garnier
Paris, circa 1740, early Louis XV period

H. 87.5 cm x W. 143 cm x D. 67.3 cm

The front of this chest of drawers is sharply curved in the shape of a crossbow. The importance of this piece is also demonstrated by its larger-than-standard dimensions, which are perfectly proportioned to ensure that the aesthetic is still in keeping with Regency classicism.

The cabinetmaker took care to flare the sides to improve the three-quarter view. The front uprights have also been carefully designed: they are "pinched" to reduce their mass and enhance the griffins.

The chest opens with three rows of drawers, the top row of which features a small central drawer hidden in the hollow of the crossbow, between two outer drawers. The exceptional quality of the walnut used for the drawer mouldings is absolutely essential: very large, top-quality boards, assembled with millimetrically precise dovetails, allow us to affirm that we are in the presence of a piece of furniture executed by a great master cabinetmaker, even if this chest of drawers is not signed. Remember that at the beginning of Louis XV's reign, the obligatory stamp had not yet been promulgated by the King. The perfect line, the choice of important bronzes and the care given to both the structure and the king wood veneer, allow us to attribute this commode to François Garnier. The commode is topped with its beautiful original red/brown veined marble, known as "Rance" from Belgium. This marble, broken in several places, has been perfectly restored without the addition of later pieces. The chest of drawers was completely restored by a leading Parisian cabinetmaker.

Last but not least, the cabinetmaker commissioned an exceptional and original bronze "garniture" for this chest of drawers. It's clear that all the curves we've described were designed to show off a very important garniture, whose gold contrasts with the darkness of the veneer. The models of the drop handles and rosettes are both powerful and "découpés". The chasing work is remarkable on all the regilded bronzes, none of which are later. The models for the apron, hooves and lock escutcheons are equally exceptional. Finally, the griffin-shaped falls are unique for this type of furniture.
