A Louis XVI armchairs stamped OTHON 18th Century

Pierre Othon, pair of Louis XVI armchairs stamped OTHON
Pair of neoclassical cabriolets said to be Greek in molded, carved and lacquered beech wood; beautiful ample woodwork with curved medallion backrest topped with a still naturalistic decoration of acanthus leaf scroll. Ovoid backrest from which the armrests with padded cuffs are embraced; these come to rest their hands in cavet with scrolls on the top of the brackets. The armrests are punctuated with interior volutes. These rest on cubic connection dices sculpted with rosettes in the plumb of the front foot. The main crosspiece is decorated with a scroll of acanthus leaves in its middle part in a projecting projection forming a cul-de-lampe. The base consists of four feet. All are tapered with deep flutes, rudent for the front, strangled in their pinched tops at their bases. The shaft of the woodwork is harmoniously crossed by deep pinched grooves. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this beautiful and very fine pair of seats. It is to note the great care brought to the elements of connection of an irreproachable quality. The pair of armchairs that we present to you demonstrates the balance that Othon knew how to give to his seats that he always decorated with deep and generous sculptures very finely cared. The stamp OTHON for Pierre Othon is stamped under each of the front crosspieces of the two armchairs. Pierre OTHON, a Parisian carpenter, received his master's degree on January 8, 1760, practiced on the rue des Vieux-Augustins at least until 1785. It should be noted that Pierre Othon also held the patent of master sculptor, a detail that was prevalent under the old regime where corporatism codified the hierarchy of the craftsmen's food chain since the 13th century. Pierre Othon left his mark OTHON on seats treated with great care, in a sober and graceful style. Jean Nicolay in his book; l'Art et la manière des maîtres ébénistes français au XVIIIe siècle page 353 qualifies his work "It is to be regretted that one has found his stamp only rather rarely because the armchairs or bergères that came out of his hands, although almost all of them have the same lines, are of excellent workmanship. The Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris shows him a basket sofa and two marquises of perfect elegance. Other nice specimens of his work were in the old Zarine collection and in the after death sale of Mme la duchesse d'Avaray, née Séguier. Bibliography: The cabinetmakers of the eighteenth century by François de Salverte and Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème Siècle - Pierre Kjellberg page 629- Les Editions de l'Amateur of 1989. The Art and manner of the French master cabinetmakers in the eighteenth century by Jean Nicolay
