Pair of stone high reliefs carved with lion's heads, late 17th century

Very fine and expressive sculptures of lions' heads.
Work in high relief, some parts in the round.
Sculpted in blocks of yellow sandstone of Alsace (quarries of Stangenberg)
the stone used to build Colmar and Thann among others.
The quality of execution is quite remarkable; the open mouth
lets appear threatening fangs.
the two mufles are different, with a variety of looks ( lion and lioness ? )
Provenance: Alsatian castle located, built in the second half of the seventeenth (destroyed in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century)
