14th Century Limestone Head, Probably A King Of France

Although eroded, this head shows fine qualities of sculpture and a naturalistic treatment of the hair placing it in classical French Gothic sculpture.
His bowl hairstyle with light undulations is typical of the kings of France. The presence of an old metal rod in the top of the skull, intended for the restoration of a high headdress, certainly indicates the presence of an old crown.
The face is similar to the stylized representations of Philippe-Auguste, although this head is later.
Golden limestone - blue gray coloring of the surface due to old repainting and probably atmospheric pollutants
Height (excluding base): 19 cm - Depth: 17.5 cm - Width: 19 cm
On a beautiful bronze base
Total height: 30 cm
Provenance: Champagne region auction sale
