Dogs resting - Zacharias Noterman (1824 - 1890)

Charming oil painting by the Belgian artist Zacharias Noterman (1824 - 1890)

Size: 32 x 39 cm - Gilded frame with moulding - Signed.

He was born in Ghent in 1824. The son of Jean Noterman, a ceiling painter and decorator, and Marie-Catherine Haelterman, he was first trained by his older brother, Emmanuel Noterman, before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

He lived in Antwerp with his brother for a while before moving to Paris. He specialised in singeries, humorous paintings featuring monkeys dressed in costumes and performing human activities (trades, hobbies and pleasures of the time, such as playing dice, music or smoking). He also produced several paintings of dogs and cats, as well as circus scenes and engravings with similar subjects to his paintings. During his career, he participated several times in the Salon de peinture et de sculpture in Paris.

He died in Paris in 1890.

These works can be seen in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Cognac, the Musée des beaux-arts de Dunkerque, the Petit Palais in Paris and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
