A tuscan Renaissance carved dark walnut cassone

Cassone with the coat of arms of the powerful Florentine family Tornaquinci


This impressive Florentine cassone has a beautiful façade enriched in the corners by two beautiful acanthus leaves and rests on two strong lion paws feet.

The decor is carved in the panel and spreads on the facade. In the center two rectangular frames are hemmed by egg-and-tongue and billet mouldings. Inside grows wide floral scrolls. The facade is centred by a laurel-wreath medalion bearing the coat of arm of the Tornaquinci on a cut-out leather motif.

The lid is linked to the chest thanks to two fine wrought iron hinges. A molded wood frame hems the lid and a veneered bent wood sheet allows a raised platform.

This powerful cassone has a design very similar to the 16th century tuscan table exhibited in the Palazzo Davanzati in Florence.
