History
Our snuffbox is characteristic of the production of monogrammed yellow gold "presentation boxes", notably made by Louis-François Tronquoy, of whom we know of other close examples (see below). Under his reign, Louis-Philippe, but also some of his sons such as the Duke of Orleans or the Duke of Aumale, used to offer these gold snuffboxes, made with their ciphers, for service to the Crown, as a diplomatic gift or more rarely for their family circle. Most often ordered from the workshops of Morel, Bernard or Bapst, goldsmiths of the King and the Crown, or Maignan, goldsmith of the Queen, few of them with the Louis-Philippe's cipher are known combining gold, the "bleu roi" enamel and diamonds.
