Prancing horse - 18th century French school after Van der Meulen

French school of the 18th century, beautiful drawing of a prancing horse in the taste of those of Adam Frans van der Meulen. Louis XIV style of the 18th century, our drawing is signed Maurepas on the marie Louise. It is presented in a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame of Louis XVI period.

Adam-François Van der Meulen, (1632 1690) is a Flemish painter who worked extensively for the French court during the reign of Louis XIV. He specialized in battle scenes with Louis XIV in the foreground or a great aristocrat represented on a prancing horse like ours.
Beautiful drawing (it is not an engraving!), very finely executed with a good mastery of the morphology and musculature and the associated play of light and shadow. It is probably a preparatory study for a great portrait or a cover by a talented follower in the 18th century.
Beautiful collection piece, very "grand genre".

Size of the frame 62cm by 51,5cm
Size of the drawing 45,5cm by 36cm
