Joan of Arc in prayer, a mid-20th century sculpture, cut directly in a Burgundy stone, signed on its base G. Salendre. Very nice state of presentation, the base is included in the height indicated.
Georges Salendre, born in 1890 in Romanèche-la-Montagne (Ain), died in Lyon in 1985. This Lyon sculptor won a first prize for sculpture at the Lyon School of Fine Arts in 1913, seriously injured during the First World War, he entered the resistance in 1940. Author of numerous memorials to the glory of the soldiers who died for France, he was the author in 1948 (with the architect Louis Thomas) of the monumental "Stone Watchman" in Place Bellecour. Grand prize of the International Sculpture Exhibition in Paris in 1937, his works are also inspired by different themes ranging from contemporary political figures, scenes of life or religion. In 1950 Georges Salendre was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honour for his actions in the resistance.
