Japan, rare and very large inro, Edo period, 18th century.

This 3-compartment inro is exceptionally large since its height is 15.8 cm.
These inros are often called sumo inro.
However, this one presents particularities which allow to know a little more about its history. It is in mother-of-pearl (aogai) on a background of black lacquer. This technique was often used for objects related to the samurai like jingasa helmets, naginata spears or even saddles called kura. The Ka Mon, which constitutes all the decoration because it is represented on each of the faces, is that of the Daimyo Ichikawa at the time when he resided at the castle of Kameyama from 1742.
15.8 x 11 x 5
