French furniture & objets d'art from the 18th century
Finely chased bronze sculpture with a beautiful medal-brown patina, depicting an elegant young woman leaning against a column, holding a tambourine in one hand and a shawl in the other, draped along her body.
Signed DUBOIS on the base.
Paul Dubois was born in Nogent-sur-Seine in 1827 and died in Paris in 1905.
The son of a notary, he initially studied law but, drawn to sculpture, entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1858, where he remained for one year. He then spent four years in Italy, notably in Florence, where he discovered Florentine Renaissance sculpture, which would leave a lasting mark on his art.
He became curator of the Louvre Museum in 1873, a member of the Institut de France in 1876, and director of the École des Beaux-Arts in 1878.
