Large marble garden statue, Italian or French School, dating from the late 17th century.
This imposing sculpture was probably originally placed near a body of water or at the center of a fountain.
It is in good condition, with the natural patina acquired through prolonged outdoor exposure.
Mythological subject: Amphitrite and Poseidon, whose union is associated with the origin of the constellation Delphinus.
Amphitrite was a sea nymph with whom Poseidon fell in love and whom he sought to abduct. She fled, but a dolphin persuaded her that the God of the Seas was a worthy suitor. In gratitude, Poseidon placed the dolphin among the stars, thus giving rise to the constellation Delphinus.
An exceptional piece distinguished by the quality of its carving, its mythological composition featuring two figures, and its impressive size.
