Horsemen Resting in the Village
Flemish Master
Mid-19th century
Oil on zinc
Dimensions: 52 x 44 cm
Period frame: 73 x 64 cm
Excellent condition
The painting depicts a scene typical of the Flemish school—a genre made famous by the Belgian family of artists headed by David Teniers.
Here, the artist moves away from the more common tavern scenes featuring drinkers, smokers, and card players, opting instead for a complex outdoor composition—one of the most delightful and highly regarded subjects in this artistic tradition, which is characterized by a distinctly naive charm.
A group of horsemen has stopped in the village to refresh themselves and rest their mounts, while farriers prepare to shoe the horses.
The atmosphere is one of lively cheer, as the event breaks the monotony of village life.
The painting is executed in oil on a zinc plate with exquisite refinement. The perfection of detail—seen in the figures, the animals (including the ubiquitous small dog), and the distinctive houses—is rarely found in works of this type.
The painting's excellent condition allows every minute detail to be clearly appreciated.
It retains its original frame.
