Pair of Brass Shokudai Candlesticks with Imperial Motifs, Japan, Late Edo

These candlesticks stand on hemispherical brass bases, richly engraved with floral decoration including the imperial chrysanthemum and kiri, or paulownia. These motifs, associated with Japanese imperial iconography, give the pair a particular interest. They clearly differ from more standard models, which are often plainer or primarily functional.

The form follows the traditional shokudai type, with a heavy base, vertical stem, upper drip tray and central spike for the candle. The engraved decoration covers the base with remarkable density, combining flowers, foliage and finely punched grounds. The warm brown-gold patina of the brass enhances the engraved surface and gives the pair a strong decorative presence.

The rarity of this pair lies in the combination of its large size, the survival of the pair, and above all the presence of imperial motifs on the bases. These candlesticks belong both to the world of Japanese ritual and domestic objects and to that of collecting, through their decorative quality and unusual iconography.
