Giovanni Cariani (1485–1547), an Italian High Renaissance painter and a representative of the Venetian school. His work developed under the strong influence of Giorgione, Titian, and Palma Vecchio. He was born in Bergamo but moved to Venice at a young age. He is believed to have studied under Giovanni Bellini.
A similar painting with a comparable subject is in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, but it is smaller in size and does not include the still life with the carpet-covered table. The Detroit painting is attributed to Titian.
The painting has a carved frame, possibly dating from the 16th or 17th century.
The painting requires restoration.
