Presented here is a pair of portraits by the Austrian painter Leopold Fertbauer (1802–1875):
Portrait of a Lady in a Red Shawl
Portrait of a Gentleman (circa 1830)
These two works were conceived as companion portraits. The gentleman and the lady are depicted wearing formal attire characteristic of Viennese Biedermeier fashion. Each portrait is executed in oil on a wooden panel and measures 25 × 19.3 cm.
Together, they form a classic pair of family portraits, characteristic of Austrian portraiture from the first third of the nineteenth century.
Leopold Fertbauer was a distinguished Austrian painter, renowned as a master of intimate portraiture and one of the leading representatives of the Viennese School. In addition to his artistic career, Fertbauer served as curator of the Picture Gallery of the Princely House of Liechtenstein, reflecting the high esteem in which he was held within Vienna’s artistic circles. Both portraits are in excellent condition.
