Mazarin Desk circa 1860–1880 with Tortoiseshell and Brass Boulle Marquetry

A fine Mazarin desk veneered in ebony on all sides and richly decorated with the celebrated Boulle marquetry technique.

The façade is fitted with seven drawers and a central cupboard door. The desk stands on eight tapering legs joined by elegant X-shaped stretchers, a characteristic feature of the Mazarin form.

The decoration is executed in the manner of Jean Bérain, with intricate inlays of brass and pewter set against a red tortoiseshell ground. The remarkable design is populated with a wealth of figures, including putti, Mercury, exotic characters, monkeys, birds, dragons, squirrels and sphinxes. These animated scenes are integrated into a sophisticated network of grotesques, scrolling foliage, architectural ornaments and arabesques.

The desk is further enhanced with finely chased and gilt bronze mounts, including decorative finials and pendant ornaments. The top is surrounded by a gilt bronze gallery delicately engraved with scrolling motifs.

Louis XIV style, Napoleon III period, circa 1860–1880.

Minor restorations and wear consistent with age.

Dimensions: H 83 x L 135 x D 82 cm
