This magnificent monumental French mirror is an outstanding example of the refined artistry of the late Napoleon III period, when the first influences of Art Nouveau began to flourish.
The richly carved and gilded frame is crowned by an extraordinary composition of two elegant swans gliding through reeds, water lilies and flourishing aquatic plants. Every element is deeply sculpted, creating remarkable depth and movement. The lower section is finished with a dramatic shell and scrolling foliate ornament, while each corner is adorned with beautifully flowing botanical motifs.
The original mercury mirror plate is surrounded by delicate mouldings and retains the beautiful character expected from an authentic 19th-century mirror.
Both elegant and highly decorative, this exceptional mirror perfectly combines the romantic symbolism of nature with the superb craftsmanship of the finest French workshops of the period. It would become the focal point of any distinguished interior.
