An exceptional and monumental pair of porcelain candelabra by the celebrated French porcelain manufacturer Jacob Petit (1796–1868). Each candelabrum bears the authentic underglaze blue J.P. factory mark to the underside, confirming its production by the renowned Parisian workshop.
Executed in richly gilded ormolu and vibrant emerald-green porcelain, these magnificent candelabra are lavishly decorated with finely hand-painted floral bouquets, exotic birds and butterflies, all highlighted with delicate raised gilt ornamentation. Their impressive scale, remarkable quality and elaborate decoration exemplify the finest achievements of French decorative arts during the mid-19th century.
Each candelabrum is surmounted by a removable flaming finial above a circular oil reservoir issuing four candle nozzles. The scrolling arms terminate in magnificent crowned bearded masks inspired by Renaissance grotesques, while the central shaft is formed as a richly cast Corinthian column adorned with finely chased acanthus leaves and elegant volutes.
The square pedestal base is exquisitely decorated with hand-painted floral cartouches framed by intricate gilt scrollwork. Each corner is supported by finely sculpted winged putti holding flaming torches, an impressive sculptural feature that adds both elegance and architectural presence. The stepped porcelain plinth is finished with richly gilded borders, harmoniously complementing the luxurious ormolu mounts.
Jacob Petit was among the most innovative and celebrated French porcelain makers of the 19th century. His creations are renowned for their vibrant colours, imaginative forms and extraordinary decorative richness, making his works highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Monumental examples of this quality and preservation are increasingly rare.
