The Education of the Virgin is a religious artistic theme in which Mary, the future mother of Jesus, is depicted as a child alongside her mother, Anne, who is teaching her the Holy Scriptures.

This depiction, quite rare in Marian iconography, is drawn from the stories of Mary's childhood as told in the apocryphal Gospel of Saint Matthew. Almost absent in medieval art, the scene, particularly evocative and charged with maternal love, gained popularity starting from the Renaissance, the period in which the cult of Saint Anne spread, and is frequently depicted by Baroque masters.

The artist of the work has been identified as the painter Carlo Preda (Milan, 1652 – 1729), who was active in Lombardy—Milan, Cremona, Pavia, and Bergamo—as well as in Piedmont.

The large-scale painting is based on a balanced yet dynamic balance between light and shadow. The scene is characterized by an atmosphere based on a well-established chiaroscuro, where the illuminated, innocent, and sweet face of the Child Mary stands out.
The two women depicted appear to be sculpted in relief. The older sitter, imparting teachings to the young Virgin Mary, symbolizes Divine Wisdom and the spiritual guidance of the Child predestined to incarnate the Son of God.

The large canvas is in excellent condition, complete with its impressive guilloche walnut frame with carved and gilded edges.
