Set of four mahogany chairs with curved backs adorned with a tripod athénienne resting on goat hooves. Beautiful and elegant profiled decoration in curves and counter-curves, carved from every angle: sophisticated while displaying an apparent simplicity.
Directoire period work, very late 18th century, circa 1795–1800. The four chairs bear the stamp of Demay, Rue de Cléry.
Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759–1848), master in 1784, was one of the great Parisian chair-makers, working on Rue de Cléry like many of his fellow craftsmen. Although he began his career under the Ancien Régime, he quickly achieved success by supplying Queen Marie-Antoinette at the Petit Trianon. He continued his career after the Revolution, changing his stamp and adopting the present “Demay rue de Clery.” He enjoyed success under the Consulate and through to the end of the Empire, with a production of very careful quality.
For their complete restoration, we chose to preserve the horsehair upholstery on its original webbing, and to refinish the French polish, bringing out the mahogany. For the covering, we selected a black horsehair fabric woven by hand on traditional looms. This highly luxurious fabric is now produced by only one company in France and worldwide. Old restorations and reinforcements.
