Pair of veneered small cabinets, Genoa, Barocchetto style, late 19th century
Dimensions: 88 x 49 x 35 cm, top 40 x 31 cm
This pair of small center cabinets was made in Barocchetto style towards the end of the 19th century in Genoa. The structure of each cabinet is veneered in rosewood, while the top is in solid walnut. On the front there is a small open compartment, beneath which a door with a bronze handle conceals an internal storage space. Finished on all four sides, they appear very light and graceful thanks to the shaped profiles of the lower aprons; the same sinuous line runs along three sides at the top: the sides and the back project slightly beyond the top, creating a refined decorative effect while at the same time preventing objects or papers placed on the surface from slipping off. The four sabre shaped legs continue seamlessly from the uprights, giving the pieces movement and elegance. The door, sides and back are enriched by a fine inlay in which the applied veneer creates a decorative pattern that exploits the natural colour and grain of the wood itself.
These small cabinets, which can also be used as bedside tables, may be placed either in the centre of a room or near sofas, walls or corners, in a variety of interiors, and can be combined with both antique and modern furnishings.
