Saint John the Baptist – 17th Century Polychrome Stone Sculpture

Saint John the Baptist is depicted in his traditional iconography, sculpted in limestone that has retained its polychromy.
With his right hand, the Saint points to the Mystic Lamb, which he supports on a book resting in his left hand.
The expression is gentle on a face framed by flowing, shoulder-length hair. The folds of the garment covering the sheepskin tunic that Saint John the Baptist wears next to his skin are beautifully rendered.
The pose is classic, but the sculptor has created a generous work, imbued with a sense of peace.
