South German or Italian, 18th century
Corpus Christi
Gilt and polychromed wood
57.5 cm. high x 48 cm. wide / 23 ½ ins by 19 ins

Provenance:
Private collection, England

This fine Corpus Christi figure likely originates from a crucifix in a church or private chapel. Here Christ is shown wearing a crown of thorns and gilded perizonium, His wounds highlighted with drops of painted blood. It is carved with fine anatomical detailing of the ribcage and downturned face. The reverse shows signs of old wear, suggesting it was fixed to a Cross.

For a German Corpus with a similar composition to the present figure, dated to the eighteenth century, see Christie’s, Amsterdam, European Furniture, Works of Art and Carpets, 4 Sep 2003, lot 414. The more classical rendering of the face and drapery, meanwhile, may suggest an Italian origin.
