Rare Gothic forged iron casket, made in France in the mid-15th century, displaying remarkable ironwork and openwork decoration characteristic of the late medieval period. The rectangular box with domed lid is entirely clad in iron plates richly decorated with geometric and interlaced motifs, typical of the Gothic ornamental vocabulary.
The lid is reinforced with longitudinal ribs and adorned with hammered relief patterns forming a repeating textured surface. The sides are fitted with pierced panels with interlace designs, revealing the underlying structure and demonstrating a highly skilled level of craftsmanship in medieval forging.
The front features a complex locking mechanism with hasp and stepped, toothed elements, characteristic of late medieval security caskets, designed both for protection of the contents and for visual impact. Iron side rings allowed the box to be carried or secured.
The interior is made of wood, preserved in its old state, contrasting with the forged iron exterior — a typical construction for valuable storage boxes intended to hold documents, jewelry, coins, or other precious items.
Such caskets were used by merchants, officials, or religious institutions, and today represent rare surviving examples of 15th-century French Gothic ironwork and locksmith craftsmanship.
