Early 19th-century sewing-set in amboine wood, gold, mother-of-pearl

The large case inlaid with amboine wood including sewing-set. The rectangular box is decorated with faceted steel nails. The lid presents a large gouache-enhanced scene representing the union of Cupid and Psyche from the altar of Love. The two characters are puuti features standding in front of a priest. The symbols of marriage are arranged around the altar such as the torch symbol of the Hymen, the quiver symbol of Love and the doves symbol of Venus. The altar carries a monogram AJ.The case includes inside a mirror on the reverse, a velvet top where are arranged the sewing set (eleven pieces): scissors, brush, pliers, needlecase, wool needle, thimble... in mother-of-pearl, gold and steel enhanced by a small enamelled flower "souvenir of the Royal Palace". On both sides, two steel bobbins and four crystal and gold scent bottles complete the set. Under the removable tray, compartments made it possible to arrange the work for sewing and embroidery.
This type of kit was offered to young girls on the occasion of their wedding.
