A finely crafted, turned ivory box, late 17th – early 18th century, featuring a concentric turned design and a radiating rosette carved at the center of the lid and interior. The delicate geometric motifs demonstrate the high level of technical skill of the turners of the period. This type of box is generally associated with the tradition of German and Central European Kunstkammern (art galleries), where highly skilled artisans produced ivory objects for princely cabinets of curiosities. The form, decoration, and quality of execution strongly suggest a German origin, likely Nuremberg or another important turning center of the period. The box retains its original hinge and displays a beautiful, aged patina consistent with its age. These objects were used to store small precious items and were valued as much for their technical virtuosity as for their function.
CITES documentation is included for legal trade within the EU.
