Aubusson Rug – Circa 1840

This wool rug, hand-knitted using the flatweave technique, embodies the opulence and elegance of Parisian salons in the mid-19th century. Its generous dimensions (3.35m x 2.55m) make it a centerpiece destined to define a prestigious interior.

Composition and Motifs
The design is based on a classic and symmetrical composition, typical of the Aubusson ornamental repertoire:

The Central Medallion: At the heart of the rug is an oval medallion with a cream background, depicting a bouquet of naturalistic flowers (roses, peonies, and wildflowers) in vibrant hues. This medallion is encircled by a garland of delicately crafted flowers and acanthus scrolls.

The Field: The background, a soothing and sophisticated seafoam green, is adorned with broad Baroque scrolls and architectural arabesques in "C" and "S" shapes. These motifs create a visual interplay of relief through the use of shades of beige, sand, and umber.

The Spandrels: At the four corners, echoes of floral bouquets are inscribed within architectural cartouches, ensuring the overall visual balance.

The Border: A wide burgundy (wine lees) border frames the piece, highlighting the contrast with the pastel tones of the center and lending a regal depth to the work.

Color Palette
The palette is remarkably rich, characteristic of the period:

Dominant Colors: Almond green, deep burgundy, and cream.

Accents: Shades of powder pink, carmine red, sky blue, and golden ochres for the plant elements and scrolls.

Technical Specifications
Period: Mid-19th century (circa 1840).

Origin: France, Aubusson Manufactory.

Technique: Flatweave (tapestry), offering a finer detail than knotted pile carpets.

Condition: The freshness of the preserved colors testifies to the exceptional quality of the wool and dyes used at the time.

Historical Note: Under Napoleon III, the Aubusson manufactories experienced a second golden age. The designs were largely inspired by the 18th century (Louis XV and Louis XVI styles) while incorporating an ornamental density and a taste for comfort characteristic of the upper middle class of the Second Empire.
