A student of François Boucher, he distinguished himself with portraits imbued with grace and naturalness, in which elegant poses were combined with a gentle expression.

This subject is perfectly in line with Drouais's strength: portraits of children and young adolescents.

Through The Young Student, he developed a new iconography for his time, in which children were no longer simply idealized little adults, but sensitive, attentive beings captured in a moment of intimacy.
