Ernest Jean DELAHAYE 1855-1921
Ernest Jean Delahaye was attracted to drawing from an early age, and his academic training at the Beaux-Arts = oriented him towards history painting, urban landscapes and genre scenes.
As early as 1875, Delahaye was exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, a must for any artist wishing to make a name for himself in late XIX? century Paris.
He would regularly show paintings there throughout his career.
His work was well received by critics and the public alike, particularly for the documentary accuracy of his industrial and military scenes, which reveal a keen eye for the changes taking place in modern France.
Our painting of the visit of Minister of War Bertaux (1852-1911), by Ernest Jean Delahaye, depicts an official scene taking place in a school hall or municipal venue.
Delahaye uses a soft, luminous palette of beiges, warm grays and pastels, and a precise brushwork that lends the scene an atmosphere both solemn and warm.
