Pair of candlesticks in Chinese porcelain and biscuit from the Kangxi period (1662–1722), with blue enamel and gilt bronze mounts from the Régence period, circa 1720, decorated with a magot and flowers, the candle socket and drip pan in blue enamel with a scattered floral motif.

Their purpose was to illustrate daily life in China through its various craftsmen and members of the elite, and to inspire fascination through their easily conveyed exoticism. These figures later served as models for the various European ceramic manufactories: Meissen as early as 1710, Chantilly, Saint-Cloud, and they were even reproduced in Strasbourg faience. The enthusiasm that arose at the end of the 18th century continued throughout the 19th century.
