Custodian And Holy Oil Box In Silver-gilt - Germany 19th Century

Our oil box is surmounted by a central pyx. This is an original arrangement used for the viaticum and a religious goldsmith's collector's item. Christ on the cross surrounded by the two glorious stars is represented on the front of the pyx holding the consecrated hosts. He is surrounded by three medallions representing God the Father, the Virgin and Joseph. A ternary that echoes the Holy Trinity. Also engraved in Latin and Gothic letters are two of the verses of the Lauda Sion, written by Saint Thomas Aquinas in 1264: "Ecce panis angelorum factus cibus viatorum" or, "Here is the bread of the angels, become the food of pilgrims." Note the closing of the oil box with a small rod like a bishop's crozier. A precise work, Germanic or Polish, around 1850, in silver and vermeil -without hallmark Dimensions: 15.5 cm high by 11 cm wide
