Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847-1935) The court

Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847-1935) "The Courtyard," oil on canvas, signed lower right "V. Gilbert 72." In its original giltwood frame bearing the bronze plaque inscribed "V. Gilbert."

Victor Gabriel Gilbert was a Parisian painter renowned for his genre scenes captured in the streets of Paris, particularly markets, cafés, and bustling streets. Born into a modest family, he began an apprenticeship in 1860 with Eugène Adam, a painter and decorator; in the evenings, he attended Father Levasseur's classes at the École des Beaux-Arts. He debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français with still lifes and, in 1873, with two canvases, "Before the Ball" and "The Preparations for Dinner." In 1874, he exhibited two more canvases, one of which, titled "The Stew," was purchased by a collector.

Victor Gabriel Gilbert was a Parisian painter renowned for his genre scenes captured in the streets of Paris, particularly markets, cafés, and bustling streets. In the mid-1870s, he received financial support from Father Martin, whose shop on Rue Laffitte had been an artistic hub since the 1850s. Martin, who notably dealt in Boudin and Jongkind, provided the young man with considerable assistance. At the 1875 Salon, his "Portrait of Madame M." brought him sufficient success to allow him to abandon decorative painting.

Towards the end of the 1870s, his taste for naturalism became more pronounced, and he turned to genre painting, depicting scenes of streets, cafés, and markets, particularly Les Halles. At the 1880 Salon, he received his first award, a second-class medal, and his painting "A Corner of the Fish Market, Morning" was acquired by the State. The exhibition of two other canvases of Les Halles at the 1881 Salon established him as the leading genre painter in Paris and cemented his reputation.

He won a silver medal at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1897.
He is buried in Montmartre Cemetery in Paris.

During the Belle Époque, the sidewalks of Paris teemed with merchants of all kinds. A witness to his time, Victor Gilbert was interested in the stature and pride of the workers at Les Halles, in the markets of Paris, but also in those of the provinces. His bowls of steaming soup and butchered beef, his sensitive vision, also bear witness to the harshness of daily life.

His early works, often somber, evoke the atmosphere of so-called "realist" paintings. These scenes were very popular because they combined still life and figures, the poor and the bourgeoisie. In his early works, the colors are often somber and evoke the atmosphere of so-called "realist" paintings. These scenes were very popular because they combined still life and figures, the poor and the bourgeoisie.
This is the case with our painting, where a young flower seller is courted by a cunning dandy; in the dim atmosphere of a street corner, a multitude of brightly colored flowers shimmer at her feet, while the contrast between the young man's rich clothing and the young woman's modest attire is striking. Under the influence of the Impressionists, he gradually softened his palette and explored the effects of light, beginning to dedicate himself to naturalism. During the Belle Époque, the sidewalks of Paris teemed with merchants of all kinds. His bowls of steaming soup and butchered beef, his sensitive vision, also bear witness to the harshness of daily life.

He was also interested, for a time, in the freshness and joy of childhood, in Paris as well as in the provinces, using serene and soothing colors and harmonious and pleasing tones. Although he continued to exhibit these street scenes into the early 20th century, his finest works are considered to date from between 1875 and 1890. His paintings were not only highly sought after in France; he also exhibited in Munich in 1883, in Vienna in 1894, and achieved great success in London in 1908.
His works can be seen in the museums of Bayeux, Besançon, Bordeaux, Dieppe, Le Havre, Lille, Liège, Nice, and Strasbourg.
