Japanese Hammered Bronze Vase with Natural Bamboo and Crab Motifs

Japan, late Meiji – early Taish? period (circa 1900–1925)

This rare and highly sophisticated Japanese flower vase is crafted in hammered bronze of remarkable lightness, demonstrating an advanced mastery of metal thinning and forming. The vessel is distinguished by the use of genuine bamboo elements, carefully applied and interlaced around the body—an exceptionally uncommon practice, as bamboo was far more often imitated in bronze rather than employed in its natural state.

The bronze body displays a subtly irregular, hand-hammered surface that animates the form with depth and vitality. Its light weight, unusual for a vase of this size, attests to the technical confidence of the maker and to the refined sensibility characteristic of late Meiji metalwork. Encircling the vessel, the real bamboo framework is skillfully bent, fitted, and secured, creating a dynamic lattice that enhances both structure and visual rhythm.
Two finely modeled crabs in applied relief animate the composition, their precise detailing providing a lively contrast to the restraint of the bronze ground. In Japanese symbolism, bamboo evokes resilience and integrity, while the crab suggests adaptability and perseverance—together forming a poetic dialogue deeply rooted in traditional aesthetics.

The rim is softly undulating, reinforcing the hand-crafted character of the piece. The bronze surface retains a rich, naturally evolved patina with warm brown and dark copper tones, harmonizing beautifully with the organic warmth of the bamboo.

The vase is unsigned, a not uncommon feature for refined decorative works intended for discerning domestic or export markets in the early 20th century. The combination of a light hammered bronze body with preserved natural bamboo elements makes this object particularly rare and desirable.
The overall condition is very good, bronze with attractive original patina, bamboo elements well preserved and stable.

A rare and poetic work of Japanese decorative art, uniting metal and natural materials with exceptional technical finesse. Both sculptural and refined, this vase stands as a striking testament to the experimental spirit and craftsmanship of late Meiji–early Taish? Japan.
