Urbino Maiolica Dish, Second Half of the 16th Century

Duchy of Urbino
Circular Maiolica Dish with Mythological Scene of Ulysses and Ajax
Probably Fontana workshop, second half of the 16th century, circa 1560–1570
Diameter: 26.4 cm
Tin-glazed earthenware dish (maiolica) with full polychrome decoration (a pieno), depicting a mythological scene of Ulysses and Ajax in a military encampment. The composition features armed men before a set of armor, including a plumed helmet and lance resting on the ground. The reverse bears the Latin inscription “Ulise e Ajace”, identifying the protagonists. The stylistic and narrative qualities suggest attribution to the renowned Fontana workshop in Urbino, active during the golden age of istoriato maiolica.
