Pair of exceptionally fine patinated and fire-gilt bronze candelabra, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), the pre-eminent bronzier of the French Empire period. The superb sculptural modelling, the precision of the chasing and the perfectly balanced proportions firmly situate this ensemble within the refined production of Thomire’s atelier.
Each candelabrum is carried by a winged Victory figure in dark patinated bronze, masterfully modelled with grace and fluidity. The raised arms support a richly ornamented lamp-shaped bowl, from which emerge flame-like gilt branches — a luxurious motif closely associated with some of Thomire’s most celebrated works.
The finely engine-turned cylindrical drum with applied patinated medallions rests on an elegant fluted base in ormolu. Four mythological sphinxes anchor the stepped plinth, reinforcing the architectural presence typical of Empire design. The technical execution and artistic harmony elevate this pair to the highest level of early 19th-century French bronze craftsmanship.
