Offered by Emmanuel Redon Silver Fine Art
Silverware and Silversmith of the 19th and 20th centuries
A refined solid silver tea and coffee service comprising a teapot, a coffee pot, a covered sugar bowl, and a milk jug. Each piece has an octagonal baluster shape with canted corners, accentuated by a foot with a beaded frieze.
The bodies are richly decorated with finely chased scrolls, garland swags, and foliate cartouches, typical of the Neoclassical style of the second half of the 19th century.
The spouts are molded with mascarons and foliate scrolls, while the blackened wood handles (probably ebony) contrast elegantly with the gleam of the metal. The hinged lids are topped with stylized button finials.
The interior of the milk jug is gilded.
Each piece bears the hallmarks of French sterling silver as well as the maker's mark of Fouquet Lapar. This service testifies to the high level of Parisian silversmithing in the 19th century, combining architectural rigor and refined decoration in a style that is both understated and majestic.
