This magnificent pair of bronze sculptures is the work of the French academic sculptor Étienne Henri Dumaige (1830–1888), active during the second half of the 19th century. A pupil of Auguste Dumont and Jean-Jacques Feuchère, Dumaige exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1863 onwards. His work belongs to the great neoclassical and historicist tradition that flourished under the Second Empire.
The two life-size female figures embody musical allegories: one holds a triangle, the other plays the cymbals. Draped in antique-style garments that are both delicate and masterfully modeled, they express the ideal of beauty according to academic canons, combining grace, balance, and spiritual elevation.
The elegant posture, the serene expression, and the refinement of the details, bracelets, sandals, and instruments, all attest to Dumaige’s virtuosity. The gilded highlights subtly contrast with the brown patina, creating a rare chromatic richness and exceptional harmony.
