Offered by Galerie William Diximus
Painted in 1972 during a trip to Asia, the sun rises over a valley, the colors are soft, and a soothing calm pervades the painting. Signed lower right, numbered 4921 on the back of the canvas.
Born in Trieste in 1907, then part of Austria-Hungary. At the end of World War I, he became a blacksmith and then a tailor to earn a living, while attending classes at the Trieste School of Fine Arts.
In 1930, he fled Mussolini's Italy and took refuge in Paris, where he initially worked as a tailor in fashion houses. He continued to study painting and in 1935 won first prize in a competition marking the 300th anniversary of the Antilles' annexation to France.
A witness to his time, he traveled throughout Europe, South America, and China to immortalize moments of everyday life in his characteristic post-Cubist style.
He exhibited in France, New York, and Canada.
Many museums have some of his works in their collections.
