A finely carved ivory netsuke depicting Roshi seated on the back of a buffalo.
The animal, its muzzle held by a rope, is shown with its head lowered as it carries the master.
Roshi wears a wide robe with flowing sleeves, his hair tied up and his long flowing beard framing his serene face.
The ivory has developed a yellowish patina that enhances the volumes and contrasts of the carving. Himotoshi on the back and under the buffalo.
