Jacques Serre (b. 1934) and Michelle Bargoin (b. 1936), known as Les 2 Potiers, met in 1952 while studying at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts—Jacques in Clermont-Ferrand and Michelle in Bourges. From their earliest years, the duo focused on the superimposition of glazes, experimenting with matte and dark tones, using rubbing techniques to reveal underlying layers. This innovative approach, paired with a bold chromatic palette, quickly set them apart from their contemporaries.
From 1958 onwards, their ceramics were featured at the Roche & Bobois boutique on Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. It was within this partnership that their iconic “Toupie” lamp emerged, mass-produced from 1961 and distributed throughout France. With its modernist design and distinctive layered glazes, the lamp epitomizes the duo’s unique balance between artistic experimentation and wider production.
Their collaboration lasted until 1970, leaving behind a body of work where artisanal tradition met bold innovation.
