Painting by Claude Verlinde, Paris, 1973, painted in oil on canvas.
The son of Flemish parents, he demonstrated his talent for art at an early age.
He attended the Ecole Nationale Superieure and is considered an undisputed master of visionary art and a genius of Surrealism.
His work is strongly influenced by great masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Lucas Cranach.
His painterly quality is based on Old Master techniques and, as in this painting, "La Concierge," is of the highest quality.
He masterfully creates the robe in lapis lazuli blue with an incredible sense of depth.
He imaginatively orchestrates the housekeeper as a chicken and follows his sketch, which is often found in stores, down to the last detail.
The painting, measuring 41.5 cm x 27 cm (with frame 43.5 cm x 39 cm), was originally owned by a Munich family who acquired it from the artist in 1971. This is attested to by the accompanying sketch, measuring 56.0 cm x 45.0 cm (22.2 cm x 17.7 cm), with a dedication to the couple who were living in Paris at the time.
