Gilded wooden mirror - Emilia-Romagna 17th century

This remarkable gilded wood mirror with mercury sheen is a dazzling example of 17th-century Italian art from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It features a richly carved frame, decorated with acanthus leaves, oak leaves and finely worked floral motifs, testifying to its refinement. With its large dimensions, this mirror is a striking piece in a sophisticated interior. Its gilding has acquired a beautiful patina over time, amplifying its antique charm and authenticity.

Much more than just utilitarian objects, gilded wood mirrors play a major decorative role: they amplify light and perspective in the spaces they adorn. The mercury tint, an essential element in their brilliance, enhances the reflection while highlighting the richness of the frame, thus multiplying the decorative effect. On the upper part of the frame, two jays are finely sculpted, eating acorns, bringing a lively, naturalistic touch to the whole. This rare animal representation underlines the care and virtuosity of the sculptor, who combined plant motifs and animal figures in harmonious balance. The mirror's symmetrical ornamentation unites scrolls, acanthus leaves and oak leaves, creating an abundant decor.

The use of gold leaf is a legacy of ancient Egyptian traditions, where it was applied to wooden statues and furniture to symbolize wealth and divinity. This process gave objects a precious shine and sacred value. However, it was really during the Renaissance in Europe that the use of gilded leaf underwent a remarkable boom, particularly in Italy, where it was associated with the production of exceptional mirrors. As the cradle of artistic innovation, craftsmen perfected this technique, creating mirrors where the frame was as important as the reflection.

As such, this mirror is a rare testimony to the excellence of 17th-century craftsmanship in a region of Italy renowned for its artistic refinement. Its condition reflects an ancient but perfectly preserved life, where every detail symbolizes a precious heritage.
