Born in Istanbul in 1931, Albert Bitran moved to Paris at the age of 17 to study architecture. He soon abandoned this path to devote himself to painting, but retained the geometric rigour inherited from his training.
Bitran developed a visual language in which black plays a central role - a motif deeply linked to his origins in Istanbul. He declared: "In truth, the most important colour is black. I come from black...".
This work reveals the subtle tension between geometric forms and spectral gestures. Dark solids meet ochres and earthy tones, evoking an interior topography.
The use of kraft paper, in particular, adds an organic texture and establishes a dialogue between the human scale of the paper and the intimate architecture of the composition.
This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Hélène de Panafieu-Bitran, Mariane Spang-Hanssen-Bitran and Clotilde Scordia.
