Large Regency period armchair with Aubusson tapestries

Parisian work in carved walnut, circa 1720
Original petit point tapestries, Aubusson
Width 74cm Height 111cm Depth 66cm

This ceremonial chair was made at the very end of the Louis XIV period, or during the French Regency. The backrest is upholstered all the way to the top, with the beautiful Aubusson tapestry hiding the upper crossbar. Another distinctive feature is that the four curved legs are not joined by a crossbar, as was often the case during this period.

This exceptional chair comes from the Berger collection, antique dealers in Beaune. The seat apron and legs are richly and finely carved from beautiful walnut. The decorative elements feature shells, acanthus leaves, foliage, and scrolls on a latticework background. The arms of this chair are still straight, but rest on consoles that are already vigorously curved and well-carved.

The upholstery, consisting of long armrests, a seat, and a backrest, is in fairly good condition, especially the backrest, whose colors are still fresh. These tapestries, made in Aubusson in the early 18th century, are original. The brightly colored plant motif is arranged around a flower vase on the backrest.

This armchair retains all 14 pieces of its body. It has undergone restorations for use and maintenance, the last dating from the 1980s. The seat is solid and in perfect used condition, although the seat shows some wear, as visible in the photos.
