A young Oriental saleswoman, Emile CHARLET (1851-1927)

(Jean Joseph) Emile Charlet, born on June 7, 1851 at rue des Dominicains no. 3 in Brussels, is the son of Guillaume Charlet (1822-1907), a merchant and industrialist specializing in the manufacture of braid and trimmings for cars and straps for saddlers, and of Emilie Marie D'Ieteren (1824-1900), married in Brussels on May 22, 1847. He is the brother of the painter Frantz Charlet. Emile Charlet married Louise Charlotte Schamps in Brussels on October 19, 1880 (born in Brussels on October 9, 1857), also a painter. Emile Charlet was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, then he perfected his training in the studio of Jean-François Portaels. Emile Charlet's career began at the Ghent Salon in 1874. He then exhibited at the Brussels Salon of 1875 and participated in about fifteen Belgian triennial salons, as well as four Paris Salons and several exhibitions of the Brussels Artistic and Literary Circle. Emile Charlet also exhibited in his personal studio on rue Paul Lauters in Ixelles, where he lived from around 1900. He no longer exhibited after 1910, but continued to paint. Exceptionally, he sent his works to the Artistic Circle in March 1926 during a final exhibition. On March 3, 1927, Emile Charlet died, at the age of 75, at rue Paul Lauters no. 33 in Ixelles, where he had his studio. We have a work listed at the Salon de Ghent in 1877 "Oriental Subject".
