"Duelliste" d’après Emmanuel Frémiet (1824/1910)

Golden bronze statuette from the early 20th century (circa 1910) produced and published by the Parisian foundry Barbedienne, titled in the catalog "Duelliste Charles IX" after the model by Emmanuel Frémiet. Representation of a character from the 16th century nobility, ready for confrontation and expressing a certain provocation. Signature E.FREMIET, mark of the foundry Barbedienne, base in green marble, bronze counter base. Original gilding, very good condition, likely missing the spurs. The indicated height is the total height, including the base.
Emmanuel Frémiet was born in Paris (Montrouge) in 1824, the nephew and pupil of François Rude. He began his career by studying drawing around 1837, becoming interested in comparative medical anatomy through lithography and casting. His first works as a sculptor were exhibited at the Salon starting in 1843. He was appointed in 1875 as a professor at the Museum of Natural History, replacing Antoine-Louis Barye, and was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1872. With a large number of his masterpieces displayed in remarkable national sites, Emmanuel Frémiet will be among the most illustrious French sculptors of the second half of the 19th century.
